Today the head of community service from Cherry Street Mission came to talk to us. The work that they oversee and perform is amazing. After showing us a video about how their organization changes lives, we realized how much every single donation means. She said that their goal is to help the homeless and those who are less fortunate. Through a series of pictures, she showed us that homelessness can happen to anybody. Sometimes events occur that are not wanted and lead to homelessness. Cherry Street Mission gives those who experience this event hope. The people come low, and Cherry Street raises them to hopefully help them succeed in their later life. The people whom they help have had their lives changed forever because of Cherry Street. I always knew that Cherry Street helped people, but I never knew so much. I thought that Cherry Street helped the people for the present; not changing their future in anyway. It amazing that not only does Cherry Street help in the present, but they affect people’s futures forever.
Cherry Street Mission did spark some ideas, for me, for projects. The lady said that toilet paper was always needed at Cherry Street. School could easily connected that to learning about environment and human consumption. If a class holds a toilet paper drive, they can closely observe what they are learning about in their science class. Once finish, after the toilet paper is delivered, the class can follow the usage of the toilet paper and how long it lasts. If they have an average number of people, they can see how much toilet paper is really consumed. Not only are they learning, but they are also providing a service to the community.
