At the beginning of the day, we started off with a speaker from the ability center. He discussed how people with disabilities are not any different than anybody else. Having a disability himself, and most of us not, he provided a unique and inspiring point of view on the topic. He originally believed, before his accident which caused his disability, that people in a wheel chair could not accomplish anything. He originally believed that death was better than a disability. After acquiring this disability, his whole point of view changed. Understanding, now, that people with disabilities are still humans; they just do or see things in a different way. He understands that people with disabilities aren’t any different than anybody else. Because we, as humans, form false assumptions and fear those who are different, we separate those with disabilities from those who don’t. Many people say that people with disabilities are worthless to the world, but, on the contrary, those with disabilities have contributed greatly to the world and society. He was inspirational. Teaching us how we all form false assumptions without even getting to know the person. Our ideas about people with disabilities have changed greatly. Disabilities are part of being human and they don’t change that. It is our assumptions and fear which causes those with disabilities to be considered “different”.
After lunch we traveled to the Gift and Kind Shop. We sorted and moved different donations in their donation center. It was amazing how much stuff that they had to give to other people. The donation center was a perfect example of consumption and how humans over consume. With so many thing there, you realize that people have a lot of stuff. Luckily they gave it to a place where it would benefit somebody else, but still it is a process by which humans consume the many materials on the planet. Sometimes you begin to wonder, what led these people to throw this stuff away? What was wrong with it? How much does this benefit the people? How or does it benefit the environment and the planet?
