Today, Rosaline Goodwin from Cherry St. Mission spoke to us about the organization.
She talked about what the mission does, and also gave us some statistics as to how many people they help (per night, per year) and where their funding comes from. She was very well-prepared to speak to a bunch of high schoolers with a collective attention span of a gnat. We were all engaged in her discussion (I say discussion rather than speech because she was so interactive) and she captivated us. She brought with her some fact sheets with pictures of famous people that were once homeless and showed us a video rather than talk.. and talk... and talk.
She told us about ways to help the mission and gave us each a volunteer application and an information packet. She also gave Mrs. Ariss a wish list that got a few of us thinking about how we could start a supplies drive that would offer some sort of incentive for those who donated.
Her presentation opened my eyes to the wide range of people who can become homeless and led me to realize that it can happen to anyone. It was very enlightening (and also a bit scary to think about).
