Day 3 (November 2):
Today morning we started out the day by discussing Chapter 2 in the textbook. It was a very lengthy read, but it had some useful points on how to actually start a service learning project. Since the book was made for teachers, it was difficult to put it into a student’s point of view. Also, some of the information was a bit irrelevant. Then, we began to work on our films, and almost everyone were at their filming stage. After lunch, a nun from the Padua Center came to talk to us about the center. At first I thought it was a women’s battered shelter, so I was confused as she was explaining what it was. Sister Virginia was the director of Padua and shared lots of information on the organization. The Padua Center is basically a place where students from K-6 come for tutoring with no fees. Since it is located in a dangerous part of town, the center is like a refuge for children to come to. Padua also had a volunteer tutoring program that grabbed my attention. Although we already visited the Kind Shop for Cherry St, went there again this afternoon. The girls and boys were split up and we were assigned to sort clothes just as we had done on Monday. The boys looked like they had a lot of fun moving mattresses! I felt like the work that we did went by allot quicker this time because we were used to the routine, and found more efficient ways of getting the job done. Everyone was exhausted after a good 2 hours, and we went to Baskin Robins. I thought today was a success because we covered allot in so many hours!
