Asma: Journal 2

Day 2 (November 1):

Today, a spokesperson from the Cherry Street Mission came and talked to us about the organization and what it entailed. Her name was Ros Goodwin. I remembered her from last year- she had come to talk to us during advisee time. Nonetheless, it was still an engaging talk. She was easy to connect with and passionate about her cause. To see that kind of motivational will to help others is something I respect in people a lot.

What I liked about Cherry Street Mission was that not only do they provide basic needs for people like food and clothes, but that they also instill hope in them too. A lot of homeless or near-homeless people start off with beaten and broken spirits, then walk out of the Mission with a completely new outlook on life. Cherry Street Mission's Ready For Life program is something that most shelters don't provide, but is an excellent idea. Providing structure, education, and faith (no matter the kind) for a person is something that helps them return to reality and gain confidence. I think that the attitude of the volunteers as well is pretty admirable, considering they're able to completely restore hope, confidence, and faith in those who don't have it.

An idea for a service learning project that could be tied to this experience could be related somehow to the Mission's Ready For Life program. Tutoring, perhaps, could be something that would be giving back to the community and gaining a memorable experience from.
