Sachin: Journal 8

Day 8 (November 9):

Today our trip to the Sparrow's Nest was great! I believe that this trip was the most beneficial with the best experience because of our interaction with the people. When we first got there, we had the chance to talk to the guests there. Many of them were very nice. You could tell that they had been through a lot, though. Some guest were quite, but when spoken to were polite. Other people were not so nice, but we understood the troubles they had been through. Some people had a quick temper, yelling at us if we were too slow. Others had obviously been through discrimination, because when we didn't give them as much as the other person in front of them, who happened to be a different race, they said we were being racist. The majority of the people were kind, appreciative people.
One lady told us a story about her life. It was extremely nice. She encouraged us to work hard in school. She explaining how she had done drugs, at one point, and because of them she lost everything. She lost her family, house, and job. Not only was it extremely nice for her to encourage us to work hard so we could be successful, but she told us where her life went wrong. Just telling us that story takes a lot of bravery and courage, and because of that you could tell she really cared. She really wanted to help our lives. It was also her way of showing us her appreciation for helping them, and her way of helping us by sharing her knowledge and experiences.

When we were serving the food, I noticed something interesting. The people there were wasting a lot of food. The food had come from the Cherry Street Mission Kitchen, the one we worked at yesterday. All the food given there had been donated. Not only were people throwing away tons of their food, when we looked in the fridge we saw leftovers. The thing that I thought was interesting was that one of the leftovers was salad. There was a HUGE tray of it in the fridge. Today, they had brought another whole tray, which we served. Though they may have been sick of the food, it was unfortunate to see. All the food that was thrown away was donated by people who hoped that the food would be put to good use. Most people are under the impression that when they donate food, it is going to the homeless. It was sad to see people good donations being thrown away.
