Sachin: Journal 5

Day 5 (November 4):

Our journey to the Ability Center of Toledo was a very educational experience. After we all received a disability, we went through the day and the program with that disability. We were able to get a taste of what life with a disability was like. I received a walker and had to put beads in a shoe, in order to disable it, as a disability.  We went through, doing difference activities with our disabilities. I felt that the most educational activity that we did was the PB&J Station. What we did was, instruct a person who had (was pretending) a cognitive disability to make a PB&J sandwich. In order for us to accomplish this, we would give her step by step instructions on how to build the sandwich. I never realized how many steps it takes to actually accomplish this task, but also how specific. I understood the troubles that those with cognitive disabilities possess. Another activity that I thought was really beneficial was our conversation with someone who was blind. This person, though, received her blindness only a few years ago. This was also educational because it gave information on how our society is not set up to benefit them. She talked about how things are difficult now, but how technology made her life possible. Overall, I really enjoyed our training program at the Ability Center, and I hope that we can volunteer there in the future.
