Today, we went to the Sparrow's Nest, which is an extension of Cherry Street Mission (battered women shelter). We served lunch to the ladies there and talked to them a little. Some of them were really nice and gentle, but a few of them seemed bitter. It seemed like they were fed up with their situations and impatient. I felt a little bit uncomfortable there, and even a little scared at times. When we were serving, there were some ladies who were really friendly.
I think my favorite part of the day today was something I heard from one of the ladies I served. She told us about her own life and what we should and shouldn't do with ours. She told us a really sad story, saying that she was once a drug addict. She told us that she lost everything that she had, which sort of reminded me of the Bag Lady, the one Ross Goodwin told us about, the one who had everything and lost it all to a fire. I felt terrible for her. Anyway, this woman told us that every part of her life was lost, and then she gave us some advice, saying that we should study hard and learn, so we can do something with our lives. While I felt sorry for her, it also impressed me how freely she was willing to tell her devastating tale and warn us against it. She was very kind.
